NACO, Honduras – St. Louis native Sgt. Lauren Wulff, a non-commissioned officer with the 220th Horizontal Engineer Company, is putting her motherly instinct to work; not only on the home front, but while she is serving her country down in Honduras.
Wulff is serving her two week annual training for the BTH 2012 Honduras-mission as a “combo NCO,” whose duties include both overseeing and training other engineering soldiers at the construction sites, as well as serving as an S-3 operations NCO on the Forward Operating Base.
Her time spent training soldiers definitely “hits home” when talking about being both a mother and a leader within the army.
“Whenever I’m training or talking to soldiers down here and back home, I really try to understand their problems, and what their thinking process is,” Wulff said. “Much like being a mother, when I explain things I make sure the soldiers really understand what it is we are trying to accomplish, and try to get a sense of how they’re feeling.”
A big focus of the overall BTH mission has been the constructing of new medical facilities and schools, as well as repairing existing structures.
“I love doing things like this to help people,” Wulff said. “It’s such a great feeling to be able to give back to people, and it makes me definitely appreciate the things I have and that my kids have in our lives.”
Wulff’s sense of motherhood also came into play when she visited the Medical Readiness Training Exercise facility in San Marcos, where medical services were offered to Hondurans in multiple specialties including pediatrics, where Wulff says she spent a majority of her time.
“Seeing those kids and seeing what we are doing for them just really hit me,” Wulff said. “I just loved being able to pick them up and hold them and play with them, it’s such a great feeling to be a mom, not only to my own kids, but the children here as well.”
“When I get back I’ll definitely be able to show my own kids how very fortunate we are, and all of the good things that we have,” Wulff said. “Being able to give humanitarian assistance to these people has been both such a great training and life experience.”
Beyond the Horizon has left Wulff with a new experience to bring home to not only her soldiers, but her own family.
BTH Honduras 2012 is a U.S. Army South exercise deploying military engineers and medical professionals to Honduras for training, while providing services to rural communities. BTH is part of U.S. Southern Command’s annual humanitarian and civic assistance program.
Working closely with host nation forces and civilian organizations, BTH teams participate in a valuable training opportunity and provide medical, dental and engineering support.
