SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The boundaries of the Vermont Air Base will be enlarging by a few acres and changing main gates soon, with the base engulfing a portion of National Guard Avenue. The restructuring is part of a federal push to reduce all military bases’ potential vulnerabilities to threats and attacks.
This has been a process, of course. There had to be surveys and an archaeological dig (they found some arrowheads a few feet down). For almost two years the VTANG has been meeting with the town of South Burlington, attending town meetings, and working with the local community to make as much of an easy transition as possible.
"We are building the relocated part of National Guard Ave to the specifications of South Burlington,” 2nd Lt. Matthew Lehman said, a CE officer who also works as a civilian project manager for the base during the week. “This is good for the public because it will mean a wider road with bike paths and less dramatic turns in the road."
Our current main gate will be considered a back gate and in the middle of the new road section will be the new main entrance. The smaller building that can be seen being built right now will be the guard gate. The larger building nearby is actually a separate project but in the same area; security is getting a new building there.
All projects are scheduled to be done in fall.
