“It is particularly important to share [tactics, techniques, and procedures] for integrating surface [artillery, mortars, naval guns] and air-delivered fires,” said Myler, who is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. “Detachment Miller is a professional and extremely capable fighting force. In terms of capabilities, character, and spirit, the Marines of Detachment Miller resemble United States Marines.”
“The Chilean Marine Corps shares similar institutional values and warrior culture as our own Marine Corps,” added Lt. Col. Samuel Carrasco, a Marine Corps exchange officer in Chile. “The Chilean Marine Corps has been deeply involved and committed to … (assisting) in global challenges; most recently in Haiti.”
Carrasco, who is a native of Chicago, said it is clear to him that the Chilean Marines bring a lot to the table in terms of overcoming regional challenges as recently demonstrated through their dedicated assistance in disaster recovery efforts.
“Increasing [U.S. and Chilean] partnership through professional military education and exchange programs will pay huge dividends for all of us in meeting common objectives for the peace and stability of our hemisphere,” said Carrasco.
Subject Matter Expert Exchanges are part of a long-term regional engagement plan of the U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South to increase service partnerships and improve each country's capabilities and interoperability.
