SUNLAND PARK, N.M. – Fort Bliss soldiers traveled to a New Mexico elementary school, May 11, as part of ongoing efforts to provide community support to area students, teachers and schools.

Soldiers assigned to 125th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, arrived early that Friday morning to assist the teachers and faculty of Desert View Elementary School. Together they set up booths, moved supplies and entertained students during the school’s first carnival, to raise money for student school supplies for the coming year.

For the Partners in Education program, which supports public school and private sector programs, the soldiers assigned to 125th BSB continue to be active with the schools in the area.

“We had a plan to hold a carnival at our school,” said Yvette Gonzalez, a first-grade teacher at Desert View. “The only problem was, how could we get everything set up during classes and ready to go when school ended?”

The 125th BSB soldiers were able to solve that problem.

“We were asked to come to Desert View to help set up,” said Pvt. Marielou Garrard, a truck driver assigned to A Company, 125th BSB. “We were out here early in the morning moving tables and putting up tents.”

Garrard also explained why she chose to volunteer.

“I love kids,” Garrard said. “I have a 7-year-old sister myself, and being out of uniform around these kids makes me feel normal.”

The soldiers were introduced to the students when they arrived and immediately started working.

“It’s been amazing,” said Patrizia Marquez, a first-grade teacher at Desert View. “The soldiers have been here since 8 a.m., and plan on staying to help us clean up.”

“When we found out the soldiers offered to volunteer,” said Robbie Larriva, instructional coach at Desert View, “the word spread around the community, and as a result we had a bigger turnout.”

The PIE program has been active at Fort Bliss for the past 22 years. Military leaders redesigned the program so that soldiers can be an asset for the community by providing mentorship, tutoring students and assisting in the planning and sponsoring of events.

Fort Bliss soldiers have much to offer local schools, and their efforts will continue to make an impact on the students and the community.
