VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Long time Westwood, N.J., resident Joe Butcher was promoted to the rank of captain in the United States Marine Corps during a ceremony with Marines and Sailors from Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story, June 1.
Butcher, who graduated from Westwood High School in 2003, is currently serving as the Logistics Officer for the Coordination, Liaison, and Assessment Team who supports U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific at Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group.
Since being commissioned in May 2008, he has held various billets to include the logistics officer and advisor for the Iraqi Marine Training Team. While holding this billet, Butcher deployed to Iraq from September 2009 to September 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this deployment, Butcher trained, mentored, and advised the Iraqi Marine’s logistics officers and junior officers.
Butcher lives in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia. His parents Jim and Liz Butcher still reside in the Westwood, N.J. area.
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is a unit in the Marine Corps that coordinates, manages, executes, and evaluates United States Marine Corps Security Cooperation programs and activities, to include assessment, planning, military related education and training, and advisor support to ensure unity of effort in building Partner Nation Security Forces capacity and capability in order to facilitate USMC and regional Marine Forces component support to combatant commanders security cooperation objectives.
