BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – Spc. Chase E. Crull, a generator mechanic assigned to the 1157th Transportation Company, Wisconsin National Guard, was recognized as a 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade hero for actions taken during a mission May 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The 548th CSSB executes tactical sustainment and distribution in Regional Command East and Capital in support of ongoing operations for Combined Joint Task Force-1st Infantry Division, U.S., and coalition partners in order to reduce anti-Afghan forces’ capabilities and increase Afghan National Security Forces capacity.
Crull was the lead vehicle driver when his MaxxPro was hit by an IED strike. He sustained minor injuries but he was more concerned about the well being of his fellow soldiers. He comforted his crew, assisted the medic with other soldiers and was eager to exit the vehicle to provide security.
“I was able to remember a lot of my training,” said Crull.
“Everybody acted accordingly.”
He vividly remembers the medic providing first aid with the assistance of some soldiers, soldiers providing security and his lieutenant executing strong leadership.
Crull provided security until the quick reaction force arrived. Crull was ordered to go with the security detail in order to receive medical attention. However, he did not want to leave and wanted to continue the mission, displaying his heroism.
“I wanted to be there to help anybody else,” he said. “Never leave a fallen comrade.”
Crull gained valuable experience from the incident but credits the military for having trained him so well and advises soldiers to trust their leaders.
“Remember your training and trust your leadership,” said Crull.
Staff Sgt. Dominic Renteria, a convoy commander assigned to the 1157th TC, described Crull as a soldier who goes above and beyond to ensure soldiers are taken care of.
He said Crull knows what needs to be done. He takes his duty seriously; he conducts proper preventive maintenance checks and services, and has good judgment on the road.
“Spc. Crull exemplifies all the qualities of a soldier who is ready to be an NCO someday,” stated Renteria.
Crull volunteered to deploy with the unit and is a student at the University Of Wisconsin – Platteville.
“Soldiers hold him in high regard,” said Renteria. “We are happy to have him on the team.”
