BAGRAM AIR FIELD, AFGHANISTAN - The 10th Special Troops Battalion held a 5K run and breakfast here June 16 to honor the 237th anniversary of the formation of the Adjutant General's Corps.

After the early morning run, participants gathered at Koele dining facility for a breakfast and to hear from Maj. Christine Enriquez, the 10th Sustainment Brigade executive officer, and Command Sgt. Maj. Mark E. Phillips, the 10th Special Troops Battalion senior enlisted adviser.

Enriquez spoke of the past, present and future of the Adjutant General's Corps.

“The AG Corps dates back to 16 June 1775,” she said. “The Continental Congress commissioned Horatio Gates, a former major in the British army, as a brigadier general and appointed him the first adjutant general of the Army making the AG Corps the second oldest branch in the Army.”

“At present the Army is implementing a redesign of how personnel services will be delivered. This initiative empowers brigades and battalions to, among other actions, go directly to human resources command to fill positions without having to go through the division or corps G1. These changes will allow us to deploy without the higher levels of support necessary in the past.”

Speaking of the future, Enriquez listed a number of human resource challenges that face the Army. She said there is a need for more dwell time between deployments, a drawdown in troop strength and improving combat pay and incentives for low density/critical occupational specialties.

Following Enriquez’s remarks Phillips addressed the assembly. He praised Adjutant General's soldiers for rising to the tactical challenges of war but lamented the corresponding loss of some of the technical skills soldier need to perform their jobs.

“In order to regain those technical skills, we need to ensure our soldiers are engaged in professional development; research and study, NCO educational schools and correspondence courses,” he said.

“Show the Army that the AG corps is populated by true professionals with a wealth of technical and tactical knowledge,” he challenged.

At the completion of Phillips’ remarks Staff Sgt. Michael Savino, 10th SBDE personnel readiness and promotions non-commissioned officer in charge was presented the Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Association Achievement Medal.

Savino was recognized for exemplary performance as a personnel manager and for leading his squad to a first place finish in squad defense during situational training exercise lane competition during full spectrum operation certification at Fort Pickett, Va. As part of the first place finish, he drove more than 800 miles in a tactical convoy without a single incident. He also completed both the post operation and supervisor courses with a 99 percent average and finished more than 1,120 hours in correspondence courses.

The event concluded with that recitation of the Adjutant General’s Corps creed and a benediction by 10th SBDE chaplain Maj. Brian Mead.
