RAF MILDENHALL, England – With summer finally making its way to RAF Mildenhall, airmen will be looking to enjoy barbeques and other summer pastimes.
The Air Force Critical Days of Summer Campaign 2012 started on May 25, and its purpose is to call to attention tragic losses and injuries of airmen during the summertime along with helping airmen realize the importance of safety for themselves, their families, friends and co-workers.
One of the most potentially dangerous activities during summer pastimes for airmen is alcohol consumption.
Everyone knows the dangers of drinking and driving but this is not the only danger that can come from drinking irresponsibly.
According to public.health.oregon.gov some potential dangers of drinking irresponsibly are:
• Death or injury due to falls, fires, drowning, or a drunk driving vehicle crash/incident
• Sexually transmitted diseases due to unintended sexual activity
• Being the victim or perpetrator of date rape or other assault
• Death from alcohol poisoning
“Statistics show that a large percentage of Air Force fatalities and injuries involving vehicles are due to alcohol involvement,” said Master Sgt. Dominic Cilia, 100th Air Refueling Wing ground safety.
Knowing the alcohol percentage in the beverages they are drinking can help airmen drink more responsibly. According to the National Institutes of Health at www.nlm.nih.gov the average alcohol percentage for beer, wine and liquor are as follows.
• Beer is about 5 percent alcohol, although darker beers and ales can have more
• Wine is usually 12 to 15 percent alcohol
• Hard liquor is about 45 percent alcohol
According to the NIH, alcohol slows your breathing rate, heart rate, and how well your brain functions. The effects of alcohol can appear anywhere from as little as 10 minutes and hit their peak around 40 to 60 minutes after consumption.
These effects will last until the consumer’s liver has had time to break down the alcohol and remove it from their blood stream. However, if someone drinks alcohol faster than their liver can break it down it causes that persons “blood alcohol level” to rise which determines whether someone is drunk or over the legal limit. The legal limit for most states is 0.08 to 0.10.
A scale provided by the NIH shows the symptoms depending on a person’s blood alcohol level:
0.05 -- reduced inhibitions
0.10 -- slurred speech
0.20 -- euphoria and motor impairment
0.30 -- confusion
0.40 -- stupor
0.50 -- coma
0.60 -- respiratory paralysis and death
