FORT BLISS, Texas – The Army is looking for a few good women. The “Ready First!” 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division is currently training women for their Female Engagement Teams and conducting selection to add women to their ranks starting July 10, 2012.
“The FETs advise commanders on points of Afghan culture, Afghan social norms and the role of the Afghan family in their area of operation. They are able to gather information in support of unit commanders that their male counterparts are not able to get because of cultural sensitivities surrounding male to female interactions, these teams are a force multiplier for the ground forces,” said Capt. Kelly Hasselman, the FET company commander.
“We have such an interesting mission set, it’s new to the Army so I know people are hesitant, but it offers a lot. These are leadership opportunities females have not had before. We get to go out and engage the Afghan women and children and provide them with the care and help they need. By focusing on the females we are getting another half of the story,” said 1st Lt. Erin Hensel, the FET company executive officer.
It’s physically and mentally tough, but very rewarding. You get to interact with all different kinds of women with different skill sets, but it is very team-building. This unit is like a family, we support each other and I think it’s pretty awesome it’s all-female, we know our mission and I’m really amped to be here, said Spc. Jesyka Frazier, a FET member.
“I hope we can serve as a positive example to the military females and show them all that is available to them. And also to be a positive example to the Afghan people as we interact with their female population,” said Sgt. Miranda Larsen, a FET company squad leader.
For information about the next FET selection starting 10 July, contact company commander Capt. Kelly Hasselman at 744-5034.
