Give unwanted drugs a way out

    RAF MILDENHALL, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM

    04.27.2012

    Story by Ethan Morgan

    100th Air Refueling Wing

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Expired and unneeded prescription drugs are potential hazards to home safety and the environment, if not disposed of properly.

To help remove unused drugs from airmen's homes, the 48th Medical Group will collect all unused or unwanted drugs at the Exchange on both RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The drug collection is part of a larger-scale program being held nationwide, that is headed by the Drug Enforcement Agency as part of the fourth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This service is free and confidential to all who wish to participate.

The RAF Lakenheath pharmacy will place a bin at both drop-off locations that will act as an "amnesty box," allowing members to dispose of whatever drugs they have.

The goal, according to the DEA, is to address a vital public safety and public health issue.

According to the DEA, at www.justice.gov, medicines that remain unused in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse.

Americans participating in the program's three previous take-back days turned in nearly a million pounds of prescription drugs at more than 5,300 sites, operated by more than 4,000 of the DEA's state and local law enforcement partners.

For more information on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day or drug safety, contact the RAF Lakenheath Pharmacy at DSN 226-8347.
