Recruiters: Preparing the next generation of Airmen

    ABERDEEN CITY, UNITED KINGDOM

    04.23.2012

    Story by Ethan Morgan

    100th Air Refueling Wing

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Along with providing inspiration, recruiters work to train and prepare recruits for the first steps in their journey - basic military training.

"We act as a representative of the Air Force, to the local community within which we serve," said Master Sgt. Phillip Guffa, RAF Mildenhall Air Force recruiter. "Additionally, we are the first to touch the lives of our future airmen before they enter active duty. We help shape and prepare our future enlisted force for life in the Air Force."

The active duty and reserve recruiters at RAF Mildenhall and the Air National Guard recruiters at RAF Lakenheath have a total responsibility of the United Kingdom, along with the rest of the Southern-European countries including Italy, Spain, Turkey and Bahrain.

When approaching possible recruits, Guffa said their goal is to inspire, engage and recruit the brightest, most competitive and diverse men and women to best serve the Air Force.

Air Force requirements state that people wishing to join the Air Force must be 17 to 27 years old, have proof of U.S. citizenship and a high school diploma or General Educational Development with college transcripts. For non-U.S. residents to be eligible to enlist, they must have a permanent resident's card or active green card and have a permanent residence in the United States.

In addition to having the proper documentation, those looking to join the Air Force must complete the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, an enlistment physical and be medically cleared.

"The Air Force is always looking for new young recruiters to replenish our force," said Guffa. "As for recruiters assistance, this is also needed. Each recruiter is responsible for a large area, and it is often difficult to effectively cover the entire area by themselves."

For more information on becoming a recruiter, or to do recruiters assistance contact the recruiter team at DSN 665-0584, commercial (210)-565-0584, rst@rs.af.mil or online at www.rs.af.mil under "Become a Recruiter."
