Literacy program flourishes in Khwaja Ghar

TAKHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan—Afghan Local Police are taking advantage of a literacy program offered by coalition forces in Khwaja and Darqad districts, Takhar province.

The literacy program not only fosters a more educated ALP force, but also provides an additional incentive for others interested in the ALP program.

“The villagers see how the newly graduated ALP members are coming back to the village and demonstrating their new abilities,” said Abdul Qudgos, Jelem Khor Village ALP commander. “It’s helpful and encourages the villagers to become ALP members.”

Also, with this program, the ALP will be able to continue learning in their villages after they’ve graduated from the ALP course.

“It’s an eight month course where it teaches in Dari and Pashtun, how to read and write,” said a coalition forces advisor. “Every day the ALP candidates receive a two hour block of instruction.”

Currently, there are four teachers who come to the various villages to continue the literacy training after the ALP members return home from graduation.

“Eight villages have classes so far,” said Abib Rahim, district chief of police for Khwaja. “It has been successful, and it is helping to bring a positive change for the future of Afghanistan.”’

Following the initial literacy class, the ALP graduates look forward to continuing their education.

“I’m very excited to learn more,” said Mobiuloah, an ALP graduate. “I’ve already learned how to write my name and the alphabet, but I want to learn so much more.”
