FOREST PARK, Ga. - On June 29, the 3rd MDSC had a cake-cutting ceremony in honor of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps' 95th Anniversary.
On June 30, the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps celebrated its 95th birthday. As the only Army Reserve medical command in the southern region it was important for the leaders of the 3rd Medical Deployment Support Command to recognize and give tribute in an open forum.
The Army Medical Services Corps was established in 1947, yet their history dates back to the Revolutionary War. In World War I many officers who joined but were not physicians, dentists or veterinarians were recognized under the Sanitary Corps, June 30, 1917. However, the MSC modernized the medical department with officers in a wide variety of administrative and scientific specialties, ranging from accounting, personnel, medical equipment repair, hospital design, medical supply, patient registry, bacteriology, parisitology, physiology, psychology, occupational therapy, sanitary engineering, X-ray and nutrition. Positions include command of hospital and sanitation detachments, motorized ambulance companies and hospital trains.
For years, its members were only Army officers with a medical background. With varied academic backgrounds and disciplines, these officers have often been widely recognized and highly regarded leaders in their respective fields.
This event was officiated by Brig. Gen. Cynthia O'Connell, deputy commanding general, Mobilizations for the 3rd MDSC. In her address to the soldiers she spoke about the history of the medical service corps and the various fields that an MSC officer can serve in.
"An MSC officer can serve in health services, laboratory sciences, preventive medicine, behavior sciences, pharmacy, optomery, podiatry and aeromedical evacuation," said O'Connell.
Today, MSC's provide the administration, planning, programming and budgeting of every Army Medical Department effort. they maintain the Army's wartime medical capability thorough command of its field medical establishment and operate what may possibly be the most effective logistical system in the nation. In countless ways, the MSC are at the forefront of the Army Medical Department's humanitarian role in national defense.
"The Medical Service Corps officer represents the growth in medical science and military medical operations and administration," said O'Connell.
The Medical Service Corps officers at the 3rd MDSC strive to continue the tradition of service, providing the skills and leadership that will see the MSC through the next 95 years and the cake-cutting ceremony was a symbolic representation of that.
