WASHINGTON, D.C. — A native of Cleveland was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal during a ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington, July 12.

Cpl. Sirin J. Broadus, 21, enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2010 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC. He has served as a supply administration clerk assigned in the supply section at Marine Barracks Washington since March 2011.

The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals is awarded to Marines and Sailors for outstanding service or achievement.

“It’s a great honor to earn a NAM,” the Cleveland native said. “You go to work every day, expecting nothing, and work as hard as you can, and it’s nice to be recognized for my efforts.”

While stationed at the Barracks, Broadus developed a tracking system for supplemental uniform issue. The system improved the previous system used and allowed the Barracks to seamlessly track and issue more than $100,000 worth of gear to the Marines.

His other awards include a National Defense Service Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Medal.

Broadus is looking forward to the next two years of his current enlistment. He said he is torn between re-enlistment or returning to his native Cleveland when his contract expires.

Barracks Marines support ceremonial and security missions in the nation’s capitol. Each year, the Marines support more than 30 parades and hundreds of ceremonies and functions to include funerals and sporting events across the country and globe.
