Don’t be fatigued by sleep deprivation

RAF MILDENHALL, ABERDEEN CITY, UNITED KINGDOM

    07.02.2012

Story by Senior Airman Ethan Morgan

    100th Air Refueling Wing

RAF MILDENHALL, England - In the Air Force, airmen face many dangers to complete the mission, but one that most don't consider is fatigue.

According to the National Institutes of Health at www.nlm.nih.gov, fatigue is a lack of energy and motivation and is different from drowsiness, which is feeling a need for sleep.

The NIH also states that fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical exertion, emotional stress, boredom or lack of sleep. However, it can also be a sign of a more serious mental or physical condition.

Fatigue should be relieved with enough sleep, good nutrition and a low-stress environment.

On average, fatigue is just a common symptom due to sleep deprivation, rather than the result of a medical issue or disease.

"Fatigue lasting for more than six months can interfere with your ability to do your job, and even simple tasks," said Capt. Erin Marchand, 48th Medical Group health care provider. "If fatigue symptoms do not improve with sleep you should be evaluated by a medical practitioner."

Fatigue caused by sleep deprivation can interfere with work, school, driving, and social functioning, according to NIH. Also that it can be harder to learn, focus, and react.
