MUQDADIYAH, Iraq – Members of Troop C, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, along with members of the 3rd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, conducted an early morning raid in search of three targets in the village of Jazeera, Iraq, Feb. 15.

One of the three targeted individuals was detained in the village, just south of Muqdadiyah. Lower-cell leaders, other individuals that were not targeted, were also captured in the village.

Twelve weapons caches were found and destroyed that contained anti-tank mines, grenades and bomb-making materials such as mortar rounds, detonation cords, propane tanks, TNT, batteries and a soldiering iron.

Military leaders from the squadron believe these were tactical weapons caches for Al Qaeda in Iraq insurgents who set roadside bombs in Balour and Jazeera in Diyala province.

"This mission has a definite political impact on the area," said Maj. John Woodward, squadron operations officer, who explained how operations like this strengthen the ties between the local government and the Iraqi Security Forces and reinforces the confidence the people have in their local government.

One of the suspects was a Sunni extremist religious leader. The others were believed to be part of a bomb-making cell and are former Saddam Hussein loyalists.

"This operation was done to allow freedom of movement in the area for coalition forces and to disrupt former regime elements in the area," said 1st Lt. Michael Stallings, 1st platoon leader, Troop C, 6-9 Cav. Regt., 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, out of Fort Hood, Texas.

"We captured lower-level cell leaders we were looking for and found sizeable weapons caches," said Stallings.

During the mission, Iraqi Soldiers and U.S. troops encountered two roadside bombs. One was detonated by explosives experts. The other exploded when Iraqi soldiers drove by in a convoy, but no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported.
