KABUL, Afghanistan - Troops at Kabul Compound gathered Jan. 15 to commemorate the birthday of slain civil rights leader Dr. (Rev.) Martin Luther King Jr.
In a ceremony that celebrated the life and accomplishments of Dr. King, service members set aside time to honor King and what his life meant to the history of America.
Keynote speaker, U.S. Navy Chaplain (Capt.) Tierian Cash, recounted some of his memories as a youth in the south and told of his memories of some of the dark days of the American Civil Rights movement.
"It was a tough time," Cash said. "But it was the right thing to do."
Cash also read excerpts of Dr. King's "I am a Drum Major for Peace" speech in which King called for others to be of service to achieve greatness.
"This is probably the most personal of all holidays," Cash said in his commemoration comments, "because it has had the greatest impact on my life. He (King) changed all of our lives."
