USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea -- Sailors volunteered to learn basic first-aid training aboard the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on Aug. 14, to assist their shipmates if ever in need.
Sailors received training on how to treat basic wounds and how to assist the medical department during an emergency aboard the ship.
“I enjoyed the training, it helped me understand what to do in certain medical emergencies,” said Aviation Electrician’s Mate 1st Class Ismael Pina. “Plus the training lets me know what to do and how to direct the sailors in my repair locker.”
Sailors also qualified to become stretcher-bearers, who are the first ones on the scene prior to the first-responders. The stretcher-bearers are mostly responsible for treating and transporting the wounded.
“It’s important to have someone trained as a secondary,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Michael Harris. “Because the mission doesn’t stop whether one group of people are around or not.”
Sailors exercise their first-aid skills on multiple medical scenarios during the ship’s General Quarters drills. The drills simulate attacks by enemy forces and compartment fires, which challenge sailors in a variety of ways including: firefighting, damage control and various medical situations.
“Having these Hospital Corpsman train us enhances our ability to complete any mission that gets thrown at us,” said Pina.
Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Capt. Dusek, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group. Amphibious Squadron 11, commanded by Capt. Cathal O’Connor, is the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group in the world.
