FORT CAMPBELL, KY — The 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) hosted the 2012 Week of the Eagles Legacy Golf tournament at the Cole Park Golf Course here Monday.

During the registration process, the first of two delays due to severe lighting and heavy thunderstorm rain pushed tee-off times back by about 15 minutes. Despite the minor delay the tournament kicked-off but was put on hold once again due to the weather for just under two hours.

The tournament consisted of 34, four man teams all fighting to win of the gold medal, the commander’s coin and a variety of other prizes donated by numerous sponsors who helped make the event possible.

During “best ball” play, each member of the team hits the ball and the team selects which stroke they will hit from on their next set of swings. This allows the team to use the most competitive position during the tournament.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric A. Ward, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, said it was a great tournament and experience being the only player to hit a hole in one in the game on the 17th hole. Ward has been playing golf for nearly 15 years and enjoys the game very much, rain or shine. There to give him the support and motivation that he needed was his wife, Ward added.

“We won third place in the Commanders Cup points with 10 under,” said Sgt Keith Dilks, in 4th Brigade Combat Team, Eagles 1st BSB, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky. “I love it. It’s always a good thing when you have spectator to come out and support.”

The second delay occurred only an hour into the tournament that set play back for almost two hours. To most participants who enjoy this game, the support and love the 101st Airborne Division, it was worth the wait to continue participating in WOE when all other outdoor activities were cancelled for the day.

Dilks said that when a person is a good golfer it is still hard to compete when environmental obstacles are in play, but it is also easy to adjust just because of the natural qualities possessed from just being a soldier.

“I can’t think of any other place I would rather be than here during the WOE events,” said Dilks.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric A. Ward, Capt. Robert Calkins, Sgt 1st Class Michael Yarbrough and Spc. James Ruane from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team won the overall tournament with a score of 14 under par.
