EAST CHINA SEA – Naval Beach Unit Seven, (NBU 7) embarked forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and amphibious transport dock USS Denver (LPD 9) to provide war fighting readiness in the Asia-Pacific Region Aug. 16.
Bonhomme Richard, Tortuga and Denver are part of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group. NBU 7 was established August 2012 to provide detachment based combat support as part of the Japan Forward-Deployed Naval Force. NBU 7 provides the ARG with Landing Craft Air Cushion and Landing Craft Utility detachments who are fully trained, properly manned to support combat-sustainable amphibious operations for littoral environments.
“We [NBU 7] remain flexible by being ready to assist in a variety of missions ranging from amphibious assault to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief type missions,” said Cmdr. Erik R. Nilsson, commanding officer of NBU 7.
During the next few days, NBU 7 will onload over 2,000 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard Bonhomme Richard, Tortuga and Denver by way of LCAC or LCU.
“NBU 7 ensures that LCACs and LCUs can move cargo and personnel from ship to shore in a hurry,” said Nilsson. “Being able to move sailors and Marines in or out of an area quickly is an essential part of war fighting and providing humanitarian assistance.”
Commander Task Force 76 is responsible for conducting expeditionary warfare operations to support a full range of theater contingencies, ranging from humanitarian and disaster relief operations, to full combat operations. The ARG is currently operating in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility and reports to Commander, Amphibious Force 7th Fleet, Rear Adm. Jeffrey A. Harley, headquartered in Okinawa, Japan.
