MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - The city of Jacksonville, N.C., celebrated National Night Out at Riverwalk Park, Aug. 7. The event is an annual crime prevention night out, where police officers, as well as local officials, get together to inform the public in a family friendly environment.
“The National Night Out gives the civil servants the opportunity to thank the community for everything they do, and gives the citizens a chance to talk to police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services workers to find out what they do,” said Michael Yaniero, Jacksonville Police Department chief of police.
According to Yaniero, this is the 14th annual night out in Jacksonville, and this year more than 13,000 communities nation-wide participated in National Night Out.
During National Night Out in downtown Jacksonville, Lt. Col. Mitchell E. Cassell, Marine Corps Air Station New River commanding officer, came to show his support.
“I see this as an opportunity for crime prevention awareness in the community,” said Cassell. “There are a lot of communities that do not actively participate in crime prevention. It’s a great show of character that this community is so actively involved.”
The night out featured more than 200 vendors. Many were from public safety and community organizations such as the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune military police and Crime Stoppers.
“We are all part of this community,” said Cassell. “I want to make my role as the new commanding officer of New River a firm partnership with this city and be the best neighbor I possibly can.”
The National Night Out also featured many food vendors offering traditional southern cuisine such as North Carolina barbeque pork sandwiches and fried fish sandwiches in addition to fair food from all over the U.S. like cotton candy and kettle corn.
While local families enjoyed the food and played games throughout the park, they stopped to thank the public safety workers and ask them questions.
“The public safety folks work night and day, and trust me, they are dying to tell you about what they do,” said Yaniero.
To encourage the family atmosphere, National Night Out also featured live music by local artists Freeway, Dixie Driver and Blues Transition.
The night ended with a fireworks display over the water by the park.
