CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A picture-perfect day allowed 74 service members from 2nd Dental Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group to participate in a battalion golf tournament at Paradise Point Officers’ Club here, Aug. 17.

The dental officers played as part of the Navy Dental Corps’ 100th anniversary celebration.

“We have had a couple of golf tournaments in the past,” explained Lt. Cmdr. David W. Jones, the director of French Creek Dental Clinic with 2nd Dental Bn. “I know since I have been in the dental community, every time we have our birthday ball we like to include a camaraderie or teambuilding exercise.”

But for this birthday celebration, the battalion’s leadership wanted to put a different twist on things.

“When we were putting this event together, the commanding officer said ‘let’s get some money going to the Semper Fi Fund,’” said Jones. “I think the participation was outstanding. I think everybody had a good time for a good cause.”

The 2nd Dental Bn. sailors raised roughly $1700 for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund was founded by Marines’ spouses in 2004, and is a non-profit organization that provides injured and critically ill members of the US Armed Forces and their families with financial aid within 24-72 hours of requests.

“We have assisted more than 8,000 service members and their families since we began,” said Dale Land, a community outreach representative for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. “We take whatever we can get. We just want to give back to those who gave so much to defend our freedom.”

The tournament concluded after six hours of golf. The dentists were then headed home to prepare for the second part of their celebration in a more formal atmosphere: the birthday ball.
