FORT SNELLING, Minn. – The 372nd Engineer Brigade conducted a change of command ceremony here Aug. 18th 2012. Col. Promotable Robert D. Carlson replaced Col. Robert E. Chevas as the commander of the 372nd Engineer Brigade. The ceremony was conducted by Brig. Gen. Robert D. Martin, the commanding general of the 416th Theater Engineer Command.

These three men have one thing in common outside of the fact that they are all a part of the military. They all have or will hold the position of the commander of the 372nd Engineer Brigade.

“It was the best job I have had in the military,” said Chevas. “It has been a great year.”

Martin said that he is looking forward to seeing Carlson's leadership style and attributes the success of the U.S. Army Reserves to the diversity of the leadership.

“Leadership is key,” said Martin. “A senior leader has to understand what goes on at the first year soldier level. A lot of different things go on in the lives of the soldiers and their families.”

Carlson remembers the look and feel of the U.S. Army Reserves pre and post 9/11. According to him the U.S. Army Reserves was a stand by reserve before 9/11 and became a operational reserve after.

“The active duty U.S. Army cannot go to war without the Reserves,” said Carlson.”

Carlson has been deployed twice, once to the Balkans and once to Afghanistan and is a graduate of West Point. He said that he will be calling upon these experiences to move the command forward and become a great leader of the 372nd.

“I am impressed with the commanders and staff that I met during my orientation week,” said Carlson. “I plan to do every thing to keep us a viable entity as we go forward.”

The experiences and skills of Carlson will help move the 372nd Engineer Brigade successfully into the future.

“I'm looking forward to helping Carlson and the soldiers of the brigade be successful,” said Martin.

Changes of command bring a new beginning for any unit within the U.S. Army Reserves. The 372nd Engineer Brigade can certainly look forward to such a beginning with Carlson.
