CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A torrential downpour could have sabotaged what was meant to be a day of fun away from work.
Despite the everlasting rain and menacing thunder, Marines and sailors with 2nd Marine Logistics Group attended an event-filled barracks bash at the unit’s enlisted quarters here, Aug. 22.
Marine Corps Community Services, the Single Marine Program and family readiness officers hosted the event for all 2nd MLG single servicemembers.
The Marine Corps has sponsored similar events for single troops for nearly 15 years, explained Kimberli Cooley, the 2nd MLG family readiness officer.
“The last four years we have really gone more in depth into having some more camaraderie and contests like tug-of-war,” Cooley explained. “The Marines and sailors let us know [through surveys] that they would really like a [flag] football tournament, so we tried it this year. It has been phenomenal.”
The Barracks Bash kicked off in the early afternoon with a flag football tournament at Soifert Field here. Several commands, units and sections within the 2nd MLG each brought 15 players to compete for first place. Members of Combat Logistics Regiment 27 won first place.
“I am playing with my guys here as a team,” said Lance Cpl. Austin R. Smith, a bulk fuel specialist with 2nd MLG. “I think this was a great idea. I think sports are a great way for us to forget about work for a little bit and have fun.”
Although football was the main event, there were also other attractions offered to those who were not into the sport.
Servicemembers enjoyed the bouncy houses, rock climbing, sumo wrestling, tug-of-war and a hypnotism show at the end of the bash.
“I think this is a great event and a great opportunity for the Marines and sailors to come out here and do something different,” explained Gunnery Sgt. Shuntae T. Ellis, the radio operations chief with Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd MLG. “I think the best part of the event is getting together with the Marines and extending that brotherhood we have.”
The participants also had the opportunity to purchase tickets for raffles to win gift cards, a TV, a DVD player and two bicycles throughout the event.
“This is the first bash I have been to, so I did not know what to expect,” said Lance Cpl. Geoffrey R. White, a motor vehicle mechanic with 2nd Maintenance Battalion, 2nd MLG. “So far it has been great. I really liked the variety of things to do.”
Although rain lasted for the duration of the event, it did not stop the troops, who still managed to have fun and make the best of the situation.
