DARENG, Afghanistan – Army Capt. Kerr Chase, Nuristan Provincial Reconstruction Team Civil Affairs, and village representatives officiated over the opening of two wells in a ceremony conducted March 8 in the village of Dareng located in Northeastern Afghanistan's Nuristan Province.

The opening of the two wells is another sign in the continuing efforts of the PRT in Nuristan to improve the quality of life for the people in the province.

The two wells are a vital source of clean drinking water for the nearly 300 men, women and children of Dareng village. Older wells were in place at the same location. However, they did not provide enough water for the people and were in a state of serious neglect.

Through a local contractor, the Nuristan PRT contracted to have the two wells refurbished and deepened. Funding for the $4,400 refurbished wells was provided through the Nuristan PRT Commander's Emergency Response Program.

"The people here do not have a system of available running water so they must rely entirely on wells for their source of fresh water. Our mission is to provide support to the Afghan people towards reconstruction and economic recovery efforts and this is just another step in that direction," Chase stated.

The completed well projects are part of an ongoing reconstruction program that combines the efforts of the Nuristan PRT, the provincial government and the local populace working together against the problems of the remote and impoverished region.
