MONROVIA, Liberia – Operation ONWARD LIBERTY and the Armed Forces of Liberia received a visit from U.S. Africa Command’s senior chaplain and his assistant here Aug. 13-16.
The purpose of the visit was to not only to visit with and provide spiritual support to OOL mentors, but also to do a progress check with the chaplains in the AFL.
U.S. Air Force Chaplain (Col.) Jerry Lewis, U.S. AFRICOM senior chaplain, began his relationship with Liberia more than two years ago when he was asked to help establish a strong foundation of chaplains in the AFL. Back then there was only one recognized chaplain in the AFL. Today the AFL has eight chaplain billets.
We have made tremendous progress in the AFL Chaplain Corps since we began working with them, said Lewis.
Chaplain Lewis and his assistant, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Frederick Murphy dedicated two days visiting the AFL at Barclay Training Center, Edward Binyah Kesselly Military Barracks, the Liberian Coast Guard and Camp Ware.
In a sit-down with chaplains at Edward Binyah Kesselly Military Barracks, Lewis thanked the AFL chaplains for their dedication.
“I commend you all for your faith and your willingness to serve,” he said.
It wasn’t just Lewis and Murphy who were happy about the visit and the enthusiasm of the chaplains.
“I am very thankful for Lewis’ visit,” said 1st Lt. Dessaline Allison, AFL senior chaplain. “With his help we have been very successful.”
This was the third visit to Liberia for Lewis, and a first for Sergeant Murphy.
Lewis ended his trip on a high note, thinking about how much progress the ALF has come with their Chaplain Corps.
“It is a joy for me to see how God is working in the Chaplain Corps in Liberia,” Lewis said.
