FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division’s Brigade Support Battalion welcomed 40 new noncommissioned officers into its ranks May 31 at a formal ceremony held in Fort Wainwright’s Northern Lights Chapel.

This was one of the last acts the unit’s highest ranking NCO wanted to do for his soldiers before departing the unit for his next assignment.

“I think it is very important that you leave a good legacy behind that the soldiers will carry on for years to come,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Alton Haney. “Sometimes we forget some of the customs and courtesy that goes on in the Army.”

I thought it was important to recognize newly promoted noncommissioned officers,” he said.

Sgt. Jeffrey Gilseth, a medical lab technician with the BSB and one of the newly promoted NCOs, said he was promoted in February and that he enjoyed the ceremony.

Gilseth said it was the positive role models he had as a junior enlisted Soldier that inspired him to strive for his next promotion and join the ranks of the noncommissioned officer.

“As a junior enlisted [soldier], I looked up to my mentors, who influenced me to become an NCO to lead soldiers and pushed me in the right direction,” Gilseth said.

Although both Haney and Gilseth will be moving on to bigger and better things, the BSB now has several new leaders to carry on their legacy.
