USS BONHOMME RICHARD – Damage Controlman 3rd Class Mathew Huber, son of Jeanne and Mike Huber of Wilmington, N.C., is currently serving aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on deployment in the Western Pacific.
As a Damage Controlman, Huber’s job is one of the most important for the ship’s safety.
“We maintain the firefighting systems and make sure they’re in readiness condition,” Huber said. “We perform maintenance and make sure the repair lockers have everything we need so we can respond quickly.”
DCs are first responders to shipboard related emergencies.
“I enjoy the adrenaline rush of running through the ship, heading straight into danger,” said Huber.
The 21-year-old has been in the Navy for over a year and said that he joined the Navy to see the world.

Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Capt. Daniel Dusek, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group and is currently operating in the 7th Fleet Area of Operation.
