FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska — The bond between U. S. Army Alaska and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District was reaffirmed in a ceremony, Sept. 20, 2011, at the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Building.

Pete Lewis, superintendent, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Maj. Gen. Raymond P. Palumbo, commanding general, U. S. Army Alaska and Col. Ronald M. Johnson, garrison commander, Fort Wainwright welcomed those attending and talked about the bond between the schools of the Fairbanks community and the military servicemen and women who volunteered in the school partnership program.

The partnership provides soldiers an opportunity to support the schools that have give so much to the children of military families, especially to those children whose parents are deployed or are adjusting to returning to their families from deployment.

The partnership includes unit-school partnerships, mentorship, parental involvement and leadership training.

Currently 10 schools are partnered with 10 units from Fort Wainwright. The units provide soldiers, all volunteers, to mentor the children and participate and assist in special events.

Cpt. Helen Poole, the rear detachment commander for 25th Brigade Support Battalion said at one of years big events 20 soldiers participated in a field day for the students. She said she felt it was good for soldiers to have the opportunity to offer support where they could to parents that were deployed.

Poole said she like the program and said, “Every time you can mentor it’s a great thing.”

Lynda Goodwin, school liaison officer said the partnership was a “win-win situation.”

“The kids win because they get a good role model-soldiers win because the kids love them,” Goodwin said. “What is more rewarding than a hug from a kid?”

Goodwin said she hopes this partnership will continue for years to come.

“It’s just a good thing,” Goodwin said.

At the end of the ceremony, the guest speakers, Lewis, Palumbo and Johnson joined together to officially sign the declaration affirming participation in yet another year of the North Star School District school partnership Program.

This marks the second year of this formal partnership.
