CAMP SHELBY, Miss. - The Building Performance Solutions Inc., a Self Help Center at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, canceled a contract with Fort Polk, La., to enhance its capabilities for mobilizing troops and cut costs for Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center.
The Building Performance Solutions Inc. Self-Help Center at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, Miss., opened its doors Sept. 14, 2012, the same way they opened them three prior, but with very different content inside.
After closing Tuesday, the center began replacing its used equipment. The used machines were under contract with Fort Polk, La., and CSJFTC elected to allow it to expire. Camp Shelby then purchased all new equipment for the center.
The center opened approximately five to six years ago and offers a variety of services that are free to military personnel and family members. The center is capable of laminating maps up to 54 inches. They are equipped with a binding machine, a black and white plotter and scanner, a color copier, grommet machine, and electrical and manual paper trimmers. The center also loans TVs, screens, podiums, and sound systems for ceremonies and special functions.
The cost to replace the machines was approximately $70,000.
“The equipment that we had here didn’t belong to us,” said Perez. “It belonged to Fort Polk. So they came to pick it up and then Camp Shelby bought their own equipment. It’s a big improvement. And it’s going to belong to us.”
The new equipment is more advanced and will enable the center to have better capabilities.
“We have equipment here that we’re supposed to teach the soldiers [how to operate]. That’s why we call it self-help,” said Sotiria Perez, an employee of the center.
Perez said that the employees are there to help everyone learn to use the machines, but the customers are expected to operate them by themselves. However, if the job is too large for one to handle, the employees are there to assist and make sure the job is completed.
Crystal Booker of Hattiesburg, Miss., used the center for the first time on opening day. The cost of copies can be expensive at shops offering copying services and Booker benefited from the free copies as she copied obituaries for a funeral.
“This is my first time using it, but we have a friend who works at Camp Shelby and she comes up here and uses it a lot,” she said.
Booker said she would definitely be using the center again.
“Oh yes! Now that I know it’s here and a lot of the stuff that they do, I’ll be back,” she said.
Sgt. 1st Class Vladimir Hidrovo-Alban and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Duvall of the Hawaii Army National Guard are at CSJFTC for training and have found the services provided at the center most helpful. Hidrovo-Alban and Duvall used the paper trimmers to make training packages for their soldiers.
“My communications office said just go over there and they will help you out,” Hidrovo-Alban said. “They use it frequently.”
The new equipment has not been put to use yet, but Perez is eager to see it in action.
“They have to set it up for us and train us, and then we can teach the soldiers how to use it,” Perez said.
She expects the new equipment to be operational in a week.
The Self-Help Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All machines are shut down 30 minutes prior to closing.
