Naval Medical Logistics Command, the center of logistics expertise for Navy Medicine, Sept. 12, collected more than $500 in school supplies that will be donated to a local elementary school.
Donations will continue until Oct. 20, 2012, when Lincoln Elementary School, Frederick, Md., will host its grand reopening. The school went through extensive renovations and modernizations at the end of the 2011 school year.
According to the school’s website, students were housed in two separate locations known as the "A" and "B" buildings. Over the years, additions were added and one building served African American students from elementary to high school. Caucasian students attended the Washington Street School, a few steps down the street from the Lincoln school.
The Lincoln school became known as the "B" building and Washington Street School, which was rebuilt, was named the "A" building. In 1962, the schools were racially integrated and named South Frederick Elementary.
Because neither school was large enough to house all the students, both buildings were used. On July 1, 2006, the Lincoln name was restored, reclaiming pride in the heritage of the community. Today the "B" building is being renovated and an addition is being added so that after many years of separation, all the students will be located in one building. Being built as the first green school in Frederick County, Lincoln opened for the 2012 school year this August.
Naval Medical Logistics Command personnel have supported school activities at Lincoln Elementary since 2010. Petty Officer 2nd Class Julius C. Wiseman III, began volunteering at Lincoln when he introduced the Relationship, Integrity, Strength & Example (R.I.S.E.) after school mentorship program in January 2010.
From his relationship with the program, Wiseman enlisted support from other NMLC personnel to become mentors. This eventually led to him coordinating other Lincoln events. Since then, NMLC has participated in events such as Reading Across America, Annual Field Days (physical fitness activities), and Science, Technology, Engineering, Education, & Math nights.
Recently, NMLC adopted Lincoln through the U.S. Navy’s community outreach Adopt-a-School Program. This year, the NMLC Diversity Committee organized a donation drive that will support Lincoln students by providing needed, everyday school supplies to which students might not otherwise have access.
“We take every opportunity to contribute to this school either through our time, our donations or just being available to students,” Wiseman said. “I can’t think of a more valuable contribution anyone could make to young, impressionable minds than to volunteer. The small contributions we make now have the potential of paying significant dividends in the future by helping to develop upstanding citizens who may one day become the next mayor of governor of the state.”
Interestingly, the mayor and governor of Maryland have taken notice. Governor Martin O’Malley and Frederick City mayor Randy Clement have both scheduled to be on-hand for the school’s grand reopening.
