PINELLAS PARK, Fla. -– Command Sgt. Maj. Roger B. Schulz finished his command and his military career with a salute.
The Army Reserve Medical Command held a Change of Command and a Change of Responsibility Ceremony at the C.W. “Bill” Young Armed Forces Reserve Center Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012.
The command responsibilities of AR-MEDCOM changed hands with a salute to the nation, a 13-cannon salute and a passing of the unit colors (the command’s flag) from the outgoing Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Robert J. Kasulke, to the incoming Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Bryan R. Kelly. At the same time, Schulz relinquished his responsibilities to Command Sgt. Maj. Harold P. Estabrooks. Schulz and Kasulke both retired in the same ceremony, each with over 30 years of service. Schulz’s retirement date is Oct. 1, 2012.
Schulz, a native of Fergus Falls, Minn., and a former resident of Largo, Fla., received several awards during the ceremony; a Presidential Letter from the Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama, a Congressional Record presented on behalf of Cong. C.W. “Bill” Young and a Certificate of Retirement for his 37 years of service to the nation.
Schulz’s wife, Tommie, a retired U.S. Army command sergeant major, received two awards during the ceremony; the Commander’s Award for Public Service and a letter of appreciation.
Schulz, who will retire to the San Antonio area, plans to spending time with his family on his Texas ranch, and at the family farm in Minnesota.
“He challenged soldiers to think outside themselves and overcome their self-perceived boundaries or weaknesses," said Sgt. 1st Class Carmen Perez, an executive administrative noncommissioned officer for the command sergeant major. “Through mentoring, leadership and sound judgment he exemplified the true core of what it means to be a soldier.”
Perez stated that Schulz is a strong leader who did what he said he would do and accomplished what others said couldn't be done.
“Never in my 29 years of military service have I experienced such a positive and insightful leadership style from a noncommissioned officer,” expressed Perez. “He treated soldiers with respect and demanded only the best from their senior leaders.”
In 1975, Schulz enlisted in Joliet, Ill., as an infantryman and served as a team leader, squad leader and platoon sergeant. He continued to serve in positions of increased leadership responsibility and key noncommissioned officer positions. He served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 3rd Medical Deployment Support Command, Fort Gillem, Ga., where he deployed to Camp Victory, Baghdad. In November 2007, he was assigned to the Army Reserve Medical Command as the senior enlisted adviser, and served with two commanding generals.
“One of the best battle buddies I ever had,” remarked Kasulke.
