LOS ANGELES – Soldiers, families and friends gathered together to bid farewell during a ceremony here.

Members of the 311th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), and Army Reserve unit based in Los Angeles participated in a deployment ceremony at the Holderman Reserve Center, Sept. 22, 2012, to say goodbye to their loved ones and community before departing for a yearlong deployment.

More than 230 Warfighters and family were recognized during the ceremony for their past, present and future service. Maj. Gen. William D. Frink Jr., commanding general of the 79th Sustainment Support Command, and host and guest speaker of the ceremony emphasized this during his remarks to those in attendance.

“Soldiers, you truly are the best of us and deserve all the recognition possible for the sacrifices that you have made and the sacrifices you will make,” said Frink. “And, I would like to take a moment recognize the cornerstone of our force, our family members. Families, thank you for all that you do. We are indebted to you for all of your support and sacrifices, and please know that we are here to support you.”

The 311th ESC’s mission will take them to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where they will be responsible for all logistics and retrograde missions, sustainment operations, and serve as the senior Army logistics unit in Afghanistan to aid in the effort of the withdrawal of troops in the area.

“You will be serving the entire theater of operations in for logistics. That is a monumental mission and I have no doubt you can and will achieve ultimate success,” said Frink. “We as soldiers do not debate the ‘why’ of war; we simply respond to the call of duty.”

The ceremony concluded with the casing of the unit colors, a formal event where the colors of the unit are taken down and put into a protective casing, which symbolizes the departure of a unit and relocation.

Also participating in the event was the 300th Army Band, an Army Reserve unit from Bell, Calif.
