PHILIPPINE SEA – Yeoman Seaman James Macry, a Seattle native, is currently serving aboard amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) on deployment in the Western Pacific.
As a yeoman, Macry is responsible for taking care of the administrative needs of the ship and the crew.
“I help make sure the crew gets all their paperwork done,” said Macry. “Because Tortuga is a smaller ship, I work a lot on the personnel specialist side and make sure people’s money, travel and pay is taken care of as well. I also keep all the ship’s instructions and correspondence in check.”
The 21-year-old said that he joined the Navy primarily for the educational benefits offered to service members. He eventually wants to work in education, teaching English and writing.
“My favorite thing about being in the Navy is that there is something new and exciting every day,” said Macry.
Macry said that he is proud to be serving his country and that he enjoys many aspects of his rate.
“I do a lot of customer service and interaction,” said Macry. “I really like that I’m helping sailors on a personal level.”
Macry hopes that, during his time in the Navy, he will be able to travel a lot and see as many different parts of the world as he can.
Tortuga is part of the forward-deployed Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group and is currently operating the 7th Fleet Area of Operations.
