CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The launch of the first lady of the Marine Corps’ recommended reading list took place at the Marine Corps Exchange aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Oct. 18.
Military spouses along with Marine Corps Community Services staff gathered at the MCX for the ribbon cutting of this special occasion.
This is the first-ever first lady of the Marine Corps’ recommended reading list, and spouses are excited and eager to start reading. The books are available at the MCX and the Harriotte B. Smith Library. A lot of the books on the reading list are written by military spouses, and relate to new spouses as well as more seasoned spouses. Marine and Family Programs will establish a book club called ‘Semper Bookers’ that will explore all of the books in detail.
“Books on Mrs. Amos’ reading list provide both advice and comfort, offering coping skills, humor and a profound reassurance military spouses are not alone,” said Kimberlee Gorry, spouse of the commanding general for Marine Corps Installations East-MCB Camp Lejeune.
“I think it’s great. It’s just a way to bring spouses together, and give them another opportunity to see the other side of things, to learn from each other and have the influence of the role models who wrote these books,” said Eileen McCallum, Family Readiness Program trainer for Marine Corps Family Team Building.
The books on the reading list cater to both children and adult audiences. Traumatic brain injuries and separations are a few topics the variety of books hit on.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea, and it will help spouses to understand they’re not alone; there are other people who go through all the things they go through during difficult times of separation,” said Mrs. Gorry. “I wish I had a list like this when my children were younger and my husband was deployed.”
