HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga.— Two more Army units inactivate after a serving a legacy that dates back to the early 1940s and supporting combat operations for multiple conflicts. The guidons for the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment and the 110th Quartermaster Company—which were a part of the 260th Quartermaster Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division—were permanently cased and officially retired during ceremony held at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., Oct. 15.
“Today we honor the end of a chapter of two storied units,” said Lt. Col. Norman (Chip) Kirby, commander of the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade. “The Headquarters Detachment and 110th Quartermaster Company have served with distinction over the past 69 years.”
For two of those years Capt. Steven Smith commanded the 110th Quartermaster Company. He relinquished his command as his company was inactivated.
“Soldiers past and present have accomplished many achievements during my time as a company commander,” he said, adding a heartfelt good bye to the soldiers and their family Members in his unit as he closed a chapter in 110th QM history and another chapter in his personal military career.
Smith will move on to Fort Polk, La., in the near future. Similarly, Headquarters Detachment’s Company Commander, Capt. Arnold Jacobsen, will be reassigned to Fort Hood, Texas, after commanding HHD for its final 15 months.
“(The company has) helped me to become a better leader and a better soldier as well,” Jacobsen said.
The company-level ceremonies followed the 260th Quartermaster Battalion’s official retirement held June 21. Many of the soldiers within the 110th Quartermaster Company and Headquarters Detachment were relocated to other Army units to include the 473rd Quartermaster Company, STB, also based at Hunter.
