FORT BLISS, TEXAS - The Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps helps individuals improve their job skills, gain work experience, build relationships and resiliency, and improve their community through service.

According to Mark Cauthers, Fort Bliss Garrison manager, there are 3,200 registered volunteers and approximately 6,200 individuals that volunteer in the community here. He explained that people volunteer for different reasons, like the spiritual act of giving, boredom or to learn new skills to increase marketability for employment.

Spc. Josephine Esquivel, 127th Aviation Support Battalion command finance special assistant uses volunteering to increase her marketability for employment. She said volunteering helps prepare her for life after the military, because she gains experience and knowledge by working with children, veterans and others outside of the military workplace.

“Volunteering benefits the individual, but it also benefits the entire community,” Tephanie Hopper, Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps manager, said. “Different agencies on Fort Bliss wouldn’t be able to operate without volunteers. For example, the child, youth and school services sports program wouldn’t exist without volunteer coaches.”

Capt. Joshua Goetting, Fort Bliss Office of the Staff Judge Advocate tax center officer-in-charge, finds himself in the same situation as CYS. He needs volunteers for the tax center to be operational, so he attended Fort Bliss Volunteer Leadership Seminar to learn how to interact more effectively with volunteers.

“The goal of the seminar is for volunteers to get knowledge that will help them retain and gain more volunteers,” Hopper said. “We need to know how to work with volunteers to retain them.”

The seminar was held October 26 at the Army Community Services Center, Bldg. 2494, here. The seminar consisted of multiple classes offered by the volunteer corps and other agencies; like, the volunteer orientation class which helps volunteers understand their roles, obligations and expectations as volunteers, and the volunteer to career class which focuses on marketing volunteer experience on a resume to attain a job or new career.

The seminar also had an award writing for volunteers and a Myers-Briggs personality type indicator class. Volunteers can register to attend those classes and more by visiting www.blissmwr.com/volunteers.

“I encourage people to volunteer because it’s a win-win situation,” Hopper said. “It’s a win for the individual because you gain more than you ever thought you would. It’s a win for the community because you’re giving back, and we need it.”
