ARLINGTON, D.C. – Lieutenants from The Basic School volunteered to support the finish line during the 37th Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, Va., on Sunday. The students were lined up beside the course and stationed at the end to hand out medals and salute the 23,515 participants who completed the marathon.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” said 2nd Lt. Landon Gant, The Basic School, Echo Co., student. “Being able to see the dedication on their faces and the pride they have in accomplishing their goal, it’s just an amazing feeling.”
The lieutenants weren’t the only ones motivated during the marathon. Mike Williams, a native of Albany, N.Y., and a first time runner of the Marine Corps Marathon, had support throughout the race.
“There were a lot of ups and downs during the marathon, but there was always a Marine there to cheer me on,” said Williams. “The Marines are what kept me going.”
Participants of the marathon made sure to thank service members along the race.
“I’ve never had so many people thank me at once,” said Gant, who is prior enlisted. “It makes you feel good as a Marine, but even better as an American. We may all be different but we are all Americans, and that’s what makes us the same.”
