    10.30.2012

    Story by Sgt. Gene Arnold

4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division

GHAZNI PROVINCE Afghanistan - At 6 a.m. on a cool morning, Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 503rd (Airborne) Infantry Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, sign in, stretch and line up for the half marathon around Forward Operating Base Warrior, Afghanistan.

Oct. 30, more than 100 soldiers and civilians participated in a 13.1-mile run, consisting of five laps around the FOB. Each Soldier had to complete the run in three hours to receive a certificate of achievement. The top two males and top two females with fastest times received Army Achievement Medals.

Even though everyday operations had to continue, soldiers and civilians on the FOB showed support by holding funny signs to distract the runners and cheertheir on comrades.

The fastest male Soldiers were Staff Sgt. Michael Phillips, assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-503rd (Airborne) Infantry Regiment, 173rd ABCT, with a time of 1 hour and 28 minutes; and Capt. Richard Crocker, assigned to the Forward Surgical Team, 14th Combat Support Hospital, with a time of 1 hour and 31 minutes.

The fastest females were Spc. Jessica Mungia, assigned to Company C, 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, 173rd ABCT, with a time of 1 hour and 47 minutes; and Capt. Lindsay Burgener, assigned to the Forward Surgical Team, 14th Combat Support Hospital, with a time of 1 hour and 54 minutes. It was the first time Mungia and Burgener competed in a half marathon.
