SOUTHWEST ASIA - In Afghanistan, a U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped Guided Bomb Unit-38s on insurgents firing mortars at coalition forces from a compound near Sangin. The mortar fire stopped after a Joint Terminal Attack Controller on the ground witnessed the bombs hit their target.
Another B-1B provided a show of force for coalition troops receiving small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire near Ghazni. A JTAC confirmed the show of force was successful and no additional attacks were reported.
A B-1B also provided a show of force over a group of moving vehicles traveling close to coalition forces near Ghazni. A JTAC reported the show of force was successful.
Near Asmar, U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles conducted reconnaissance of about 40 insurgents positioned to attack coalition forces. The air crews reported the insurgents' location and provided overwatch while coalition forces went to search for the insurgents.
Other F-15Es provided overwatch for coalition forces who were pinned down in a ditch by insurgent gunfire near Ghazni. No additional attacks were reported after the arrival of the F-15Es.
In total, 38 close air support missions were flown in support of the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Nine U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. U.S. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
In Iraq, F-16s performed a show of force for a coalition forces objective near Baghdad. The pilots also looked for any possible threats to coalition forces in the area. The pilots then provided overwatch for a coalition convoy hit by an improvised explosive device. No attacks were reported after the F-16's arrival.
U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs conducted reconnaissance for suspicious activity and IED placers at multiple locations and routes near Baghdad.
Near Hawijah, U.S. Air Force F-16s provided a show of force for coalition ground troops as requested by a JTAC. The JTAC deemed it as successful. The pilots then provided overwatch as coalition forces captured insurgents in the area.
Royal Air Force GR-4 Tornados provided overwatch for coalition forces who were searching houses and detaining personnel near Baghdad. The GR-4s then responded to small-arms fire on coalition forces who were recovering a vehicle damaged from an IED. No attacks were reported after GR-4s arrived.
Other GR-4s reported insurgents running from coalition forces near Yusufiyah. The pilots observed the fleeing insurgent group hide in a building and gave the coordinates to a JTAC.
In total, coalition aircraft flew 64 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions provided support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
Additionally, 19 U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. U.S. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with electro-optical and infrared sensors.
U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 150 airlift sorties were flown; nearly 480 tons of cargo were delivered, and more than 3,180 passengers were transported.
Coalition C-130 crews from Canada, Japan and South Korea flew in support of OIF or OEF.
On April 3, U.S. Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force crews flew 38 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.4 million pounds of fuel.
