QUANTICO, Va. - After a few days of inclement weather, the softball playoff has finally arrived. With eight teams in the playoffs there were only two ways to become champion. One way to become champion is to be undefeated. The other way is to only lose once and win against the undefeated team in the championship.

Starting it off was the Marine Corps Recruiting Command facing the Marine Corps System Command at Field of Dreams Sept.13.
“We don’t have all our key players,” said Robert Holde, the coach for MCRC. “Coming into this game, we still feel confident and we’ll play the best game we can.”

MCRC started the first inning off with a hit that gets them on third base followed by another hit that landed MCRC with a point on the score board.

“We had a bad loss last night,” said Brian Long, the coach for MCSC. “Our plan was to come in strong, and I believe we were doing that.”

In the bottom of the first MCSC come back and score one run of their own after a few good hits.

In the third inning with a couple of off pitches, MCSC gets to walk to first and after three hits at bat, they put two more points on the score board before their third out.

Down by two in the third inning, MCRC didn’t plan on staying behind too long. With the bases loaded, MCRC hit two singles down the field enough to get two runs in.

“That’s the hustle we needed,” said Craig Verbois, one of the players for MCRC. “We just have to keep it up.”

After losing the lead, MCSC came out of the fifth inning as if they were possessed. Hitting one ball after the next, seemed to be unstoppable. Then for the first time in the game, MCSC had an inside- the-park homerun.

“I rather have had it over the fence,” said Tyler Whisler, a player for MCSC. “If I had hit it over the fence, I wouldn’t have had to run so fast. It was tiring, but it’s always worth it after making it to home plate.”

By the end of the fourth inning, MCSC had scored eight runs.
Being in the hole by eight runs, MCRC tried to get back in the game.

“We keep getting hits but we’re not getting the points we need,” said Holde.

MCRC managed to get one more run in before the end of the game, but, after MCSC’s fourth inning performance, it wasn’t nearly enough to come back from the deficit.

“It was shaky in the beginning,” Long said. “We finally started hitting a couple of great hits. We got in sync around the fourth inning and I’m proud of these guys.”

Final score of the game was MCSC defeating MCRC 11-4.
