QUANTICO, Va. - Bad luck was nowhere to be seen at Barnett Field on Friday the 13th when service members and their family members from Headquarters and Service Battalion, and Security Battalion met to enjoy their annual Family Fun Day.
Col. James Brennan, commanding officer for Headquarters and Service Battalion, welcomed everyone to family day before the first live musical performance and reminded those attending that the purpose for family day is to build camaraderie among the families and battalions, and to make sure they enjoy their time together.
All of the events and activities were free and included a rock climbing wall, mini Ferris wheel, train, live entertainment, a light armored vehicle, game truck, food and prizes.
There were to live musical performances but the act that grabbed the largest crowd were the two performances by the working dogs of Security Battalion.
“Our dogs work like all of the Marines, but they don’t get paid with money,” said Sgt. David Olszak, working dog handler for Security Battalion. “Their reward is the relationship and praise they get from their handlers.
“When the dogs get to us, they are like young Marines and the handlers are the non-commissioned officers who are training them.”
Marines and their families lined up to watch the dogs attack, sniff luggage and follow the commands of their handlers.
The competitions began an hour before the Family Fun Day ended with a water balloon toss, The Battalion Challenge and raffle drawings.
The Battalion Challenge was an obstacle course where five-man teams went through a goggled bike ride, dizzy-izzy, three-leg challenge and sack race. S-1 legal took home the first place prize for adults.
“This was a great event,” said Brennan. “We accomplished our mission of having a fun day.”
