MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – The two-time base intramural flag football undefeated champions, Manpower and Reserve Affairs’ Black Ops, met Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron One at Butler Stadium on Sept. 20. Black Ops managed to pull out the win, even after losing their composure, with a score of 14-13.
Black Ops started strong in the first half with Cordera Mathews, Black Ops’ wide receiver, a returning player from last year, scoring the first touchdown of the game.

After the touchdown, HMX-1 intercepted the ball at the Black Ops 20-yard line.

Black Ops began to fall apart at the seams after a personal foul and interception where HMX-1 was able to get the ball back to their 40-yard line. The captain for Black Ops called a timeout to get the team back together.

“We need to make sure we are playing our game,” said Joe Randall, Black Ops’ team captain.

Black Ops drove through the middle to score the next touchdown of the game and gain the one-point conversion.

HMX-1 kept their composure but continued to make minor personnel mistakes. Black Ops’ strong defense came through in the clutch, with multiple deflections to end the half, 12-0.
In the second half of the game, HMX-1 game out ready to play and made an interception. Their defense kept last year’s champions far from the goal line.

“What are you doing?” Myron Edwards, Black Ops head coach, shouted at his team. “Run the ball! We are giving them the game.”

Edwards’ advice was heard by the entire field, but only his opponent applied the suggestion, breaking loose on their next possession for a 60-yard touchdown run. HMX-1 continued to run the ball, gaining another touchdown, but weren’t able to run convert, leaving Black Ops in the lead by one point.

Black Ops held HMX-1 scoreless for the duration, leaving their undefeated streak intact.

“The first half was a little rough for us,” said Zack Doty, HMX-1 head coach, “but we made some adjustments, only losing to them by one point, I was happy with how it ended,.”

Doty and the rest of his team are excited about a rematch with Black Ops on Oct. 16.

“Now we know we can win,” said Doty, “and we will next time.”
