MONROVIA, Liberia – Members of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and Ministry of Defense have successfully completed a week-long U.S.-led facility management course.
Instructors from the Michigan National Guard came to Liberia to see how the AFL is currently managing its facilities, as well as teach AFL members how to better manage their facilities and projects.
“Our goal is to come up with an organizational structure to try and streamline their processes,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Byron Smith, senior construction supervisor with the Michigan National Guard.
The class, which ended Nov. 16, not only provided instructors with a baseline of where to start the planning process, but also enhanced the working relationship between the AFL and the Liberian Ministry of Defense. In total, eight AFL soldiers and three MOD civilians took part in the class.
Sgt. 1st Class Smith was pleased to see the two organizations working together toward one goal.
“The AFL wants to change their facilities management structure, but they need support from the government,” he said.
Capt. John Kokulo, AFL facilities manager, also found it beneficial to get opinions from numerous organizations.
“I’m learning a lot from them and they’re learning from us because we have different ways of managing facilities,” he said.
The group toured different AFL facilities to get an idea of how the management process is currently working. The Michigan National Guard team plans to return to Liberia in the spring with more detailed plans and suggestions on how to improve current processes.
