CHAGHCHARAN, Afghanistan - A public ceremony was held Nov. 27 in Chaghcharan, in the province of Ghor, to celebrate the opening of a new orphanage for 200 children, 10 of which are girls.
The project – worth $500,000 - was initiated and financed through the Lithuanian special mission in Afghanistan. The newly built orphanage was provided with all of the necessary equipment including a playground and flower garden. The orphans will move into their new home this week.
The event was attended by H.E. Amena Safi Afzali, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and by the Afghanistan Head of Lithuanian Special Mission, Gintaras Bagdonas. The Commander of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team, Linas Kubilius, the Provincial Governor Sayed Anwar Rahmati, Mayor Mohammad Hamraz - and various other officials and community members were also in attendance.
Afzali expressed her gratitude to Lithuania and its people.
“For this newly constructed orphanage center in Chaghcharan. The improvements of the social environment in Ghor give people hope and makes us reconsider leaving Ghor in search of a better life."
The minister also promised to provide support for the new orphanage.
