BARSTOW, Calif. - Marines with Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., can take advantage of the Leadership Scholar Program, which assists Marines in the long and confusing admissions process for colleges and universities for free. Under the LSP, Marines have the option of choosing from 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Applicants must be active duty, reserve or veteran Marines planning to attend a school as a freshman or transfer student. If an applicant is an active duty Marine, they must be honorably discharged before the beginning of the school semester.

Recently Marine Administrative Message 677/12 was published about an LSP affiliated university; Colgate University which is now offering two seats into the undergraduate program for the Fall semester 2013.

The dean of admissions for Colgate University will be aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to interview Marines on Dec. 17. Service members who cannot make it to MCAS Miramar will be given an opportunity to conduct the interview over the phone.

“These are admission seats to some very prestigious schools,” said Francis Villeme, the MCLB Barstow base education officer. “Many of these schools have a two year waiting list for applicants. This allows our service members the opportunity to bypass the waiting list if they are selected.”

He further explained the seats with Colgate University and other LSP affiliated universities or colleges are guaranteed to service members outside the normal application process. Service members are not in competition with high school seniors.

According to the MARADMIN, applicants must possess a minimum combined score of 70 or higher on their Armed Forces Qualification Test and a General Technical Score of 115 or higher. They will also need a minimum combined Math and Critical Reading score of 1200 on the SAT or a minimum composite score of 27 on the ACT.

No waivers will be considered for the test score requirements. SAT and ACT scores cannot be older than eight years as of application year.

If applicants have taken the SAT or ACT more than eight years ago, they will need to contact the education center and get the schedule for upcoming SAT and ACT test dates and sign up for their exam, said Villeme. Marines will be able to take one exam for free, he added.

Though the exam will be funded, Marines are still required to pay for their education, through either the Montgomery G.I. Bill or the Post/911 G.I. Bill.

“LSP is based on the G.I. Bill utilization,” said Villeme. “Regardless of using LSP or any other scholarship program, the fees are outside the education award.”
