WOODBRIDGE, Va. – The 5th annual Toys for Tots Hockey Classic was held on Saturday at the Prince William Ice Center, which is the National Capital Region Military Hockey Team’s main charity game each year.
NCR faced off against the New York City Fire Department Hockey Team. Both teams are not-for-profit organizations that raise funds to support charities.
Last year the hockey classic raised more than $22,000 and send a truck load of toys to the warehouse for children.
“We haven’t had a chance to get the overall money count for this year,” said David Morgan, team founder, NCR Military Hockey Team. “But we had the same amount of toys and it is looking hopeful that we surpassed what we did last year.”
The event raised money with raffles, ticket sales, a silent auction and Marines posted to accept toys for the Toys for Tots program.
The hockey classic was a success in terms of raising money and toys, but on the ice, the NCR wasn’t able to bring out the win on their home rink. FDNY beat NCR, 7 to 4.
“We started out slow and sluggish,” said Morgan. “We really started picking up in the second period though. It was just too little too late.”
Both teams were happy to play, winning was just an extra bonus for FDNY.
“It was honor to be invited and play against these heroes,” said Chris LaRocca, head coach, FDNY. “The respect and support we have for all the brave men and women of our military who selflessly protect our freedom daily can’t be expressed in words.”
