BARSTOW, Calif. - If you were given the opportunity to help someone in need, would you?
As Americans, that opportunity is available, right here and now. Every year, a representative from the Combined Federal Campaign asks us to donate money to a charity or charities of our choice. It doesn’t matter what charity, there are hundreds of charities listed. But do we donate? Do we take the time to look through the charities and find an opportunity to help someone or an organization that is for a cause close to the heart?
I would hope now more than ever, my friends and comrades would seek the opportunity to help those who are down on their luck. Not only because it’s the right thing to do but out of compassion.
Compassion is the feeling of sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune and has a strong desire to alleviate that suffering.
I believe compassion is rooted in each individual not because it is taught or displayed but because it’s human nature to protect and provide for a fellow brother, sister or man’s best friend.
In the past five years, during the kick-off of a new campaign, I always hear comments such as: “I can’t afford it,” or “I don’t know which charity to donate to and why should I?” Or, “It’s not like a few bucks will make a difference.”
“A few bucks won’t make a difference.”
Can that really be why someone wouldn’t contribute to a cause? I wonder if they know that The Great Wall of China wasn’t built in a day and not by one brick. It took centuries and millions of bricks.
With all that said, is five dollars a month too much to help someone or an organization you find worthy? Can you make the sacrifice and give up that coffee or double latte?
I have always believed in leading by example. This year, I will lead the cause of giving and will set the example of donating to a worthwhile cause.
