Local Army Reserve soldier named Army Transportation Officer of the Year

DES MOINES, Iowa - The U.S. Army Transportation School named Capt. Rachel Ryba, of West Des Moines, the Reserve Component Transportation Officer of the Year.

Ryba is the daughter of John and Elyce Yahnke of Sparta, Wis. She is a 2001 graduate of Sparta Senior High School and a 2007 graduate of Winona State University, Winona, Minn.

Ryba entered the Army in 2000 and has served in various transportation positions such as a railway locomotive operator at Fort McCoy, Wis., and transportation team chief at U.S. Northern Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. She currently serves as a Plans Officer for the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), U.S. Army Reserve, in Des Moines. She deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and conducted over 300 convoys. Ryba also deployed to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2010 and oversaw the movement of equipment across the country.

The U.S. Army Transportation School will recognize Ryba during a ceremony scheduled for July 26 at Fort Lee, Va.
