Sgt. Justin Puetz, 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, has a knack for being where the action is happening. In July, his video Firefight in Korengal Valley was heavily featured on CNN. It also aired on Fox Affiliate, WAGA and NBC Affiliate, KNBC. This month his video Firefight in Waterpur Valley, Afghanistan, made it to air on NBC's Today Show and local Colorado Springs affiliate, KRDO. Besides shooting compelling video, Puetz also does an excellent job with his slates. His descriptions give the video context for the news organizations to accurately report what is happening in the video.<br /> From a technical stand point, Puetz maintains a high level of video quality. When shooting video, Puetz's shots are properly exposed, focused and contain natural sound. He also only sends his best shots making it easier for DVIDS to publish his b-roll quickly and helping media outlets to see what is available in a timely manner. Puetz shoots a lot of exterior shots which require neutral sity filters, white balance and properly set exposure. When shooting outdoors, exposure is key and it is very important to make sure that the video is not too "hot." Hot video will not get much use, and Puetz is careful to avoid that. When shooting interviews, Puetz uses a lavaliere microphone and monitors the levels so as not to get over modulation which can make the audio sound distorted. A good example of a good interview Puetz did is Gov. Wahidi. In this interview, you can clearly hear and see the subject of the interview. Puetz's attention to detail is what the media outlets are looking for when it comes to military footage. show less
